(Words Are “Things”)

👤 Pastor Chris Oyakhilome;

Acts 20:24 “…None of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.”

Theo liked to listen to certain secular musicians and would keep on repeating every nasty lyric he heard in their songs. One day, he became quite ill and when Stevenson, his teen Pastor, got word of this and came visiting, he spoke sternly to Theo by the Spirit, “The things you’ve been saying aren’t wholesome; stop speaking them!” Theo, bewildered at how his Pastor knew, quickly took what he had been told seriously, and he corrected his words with God’s Word and got better with time.

Note the underlined word “things” in the scripture above, the word “things” is translated from the Greek word “logos,” which is translated “word” in John 1:1: “In the beginning was the Word….” There had been prophetic “words” about the fierce persecutions the Apostle Paul would face in Jerusalem. In spite of everything that had been said, Paul still said, “None of these things move me” (Acts 20:24). He referred to the words that had been spoken as “things.” He could have as well said, “None of these words move me.” That’s because, in the Kingdom of God, words are things; they’re spiritual particles, with spiritual substance and tangibility.

Our theme verse says, “Be joyful always.” This can neither be applied to yesterday nor postponed to tomorrow; it’s for the NOW.

Every word that comes out of your mouth is a “thing” that’ll never be destroyed because it’s of spiritual origin. When it goes out of you, it represents you everywhere. The only thing that can destroy and render it powerless is another word from you. Jesus said, “…Every one of these careless words is going to come back to haunt you…Words are powerful; take them seriously” (Matthew 12:36 MSG). That tells you the power and importance of words; they’re of spiritual value. How you form and use them is your responsibility for which you’ll give account.

So, as a child of God, your life is really up to you. You create your situation, either good or bad. It makes no difference what your struggles in life have been thus far, you can recreate your world from today by your words.
